Our Story

Our Story

"We went to Shizuoka to buy tea. We came back with a business."

How We Got Here

The short version: we visited a tea farm in Shizuoka and couldn't go back to what we were drinking in Australia. The longer version is that we spent a morning in the hills above the coast, where fog comes up from the river and sits on the tea rows until the sun burns it off. A farming family let us try their sencha straight off the processing line. It didn't taste like any green tea we'd had before.

"We expected to buy tea. We came back with a different idea of what tea could be."

The problem was getting it to Australia. Good Japanese tea goes through brokers, sits in warehouses, and loses its freshness before it reaches anyone. We started Japan Green Tea to skip all of that — buy from the farm, ship to Australia, done.

We now work with two family farms. One in Shizuoka, one in Kagoshima's Kirishima region. Both have been at it for decades, both farm organically, and we buy from them direct.

How We Got Here

Two Families. Two Regions. One Standard.

Shizuoka

Japan's biggest tea-producing region. Our farm is in the Nihondaira hills, overlooking the coast. The river fog here acts as natural shade — it slows the leaves down, builds umami, and gives the sencha a clean finish that's hard to find outside the region. This family has been growing here for generations.

Kirishima

Southern Kagoshima. Volcanic soil from the Kirishima mountains. The tea here tastes different — fuller body, mineral quality, clean aftertaste. This farm has been going since 1967, earned organic JAS certification across all fields in 2000, and runs their own tencha facility for matcha production. Over 30 hectares, no pesticides, no chemical fertilizers. Second generation running it now, same approach as the first.

What We Believe

Direct relationships, not supply chains.

We've been to the farms. We've sat with the families, walked the fields, tasted tea straight from the line. No brokers sit between us and the growers. That keeps quality up and lets us pay them properly.

Organic because it makes better tea.

Our Kirishima farm went organic in 2000 — not because the market asked for it, but because the tea tasted better when the soil was left alone. Twenty-five years later, they haven't changed their mind. Neither have we.

Less choice, done properly.

We keep the range small. Everything in the shop is something we drink at home. If we wouldn't buy it ourselves, we don't stock it.

Try it yourself.
